ESA-QSG4EMT ESA-QSG4EMT Period 01.09.2022 - 31.03.2024 Funding Agency ESA (European Space Agency) Contacts Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Kusche Dr.-Ing. Christina Strohmenger Summary The project develops user requirements for future quantum space gravimetry missions, intended to the sustained observation of climate signals. We analyze the error budget of current as well as future gravity satellite missions in order to identify the biggest error contributors, and discuss potential future improvements regarding instrumentation, satellite constellations and processing techniques to meet these requirements, with the focus on low-low inter-satellite tracking mission constellations, quantum gradiometry and combined concepts. The main advantage of quantum instruments is their nearly flat error spectrum, reducing long-wavelength errors inherent to the use of conventional electrostatic accelerometers. The IGG group contributes to WP 100 (user requirements for QSG missions), WP 1000 (Hydrological medium to long-term and climate applications) and it is responsible for WP 900 (hydrological short-term and ocean applications) of the study.
