Therefore observing the MDT provides valuable information for evaluating or improving ocean models. Using this information is complicated by the inconsistent representation of MDT in observations and ocean models. This problem is addressed by a consistent treatment of satellite altimetry and geoid height information on an ocean model grid. The altimetric sea surface is expressed as a sum of geoid heights represented by spherical harmonic functions and the mean dynamic topography parameterized by a finite element method. Within this framework the inversion and smoothing processes are avoided that are necessary in step-by-step approaches, such that the normal equations of the MDT can be accumulated in a straightforward way. Conveniently, these normal equations are the appropriate weight matrices for model-data misfits in least-squares ocean model inversions. Two prototypes of these rigorously combined MDT models, with an associated complete error description including the omission error, are developed for the North Atlantic Ocean and assimilated into a 3D-inverse ocean model. This is even more true, if additional information about the parameters is available, that could improve the accuracy of the estimate. However, if such additional information is provided in the form of inequality constraints, most of the standard tools of quality description (variance propagation, confidence ellipses, etc...) cannot be applied, as there is no analytical relationship between parameters and observations. Some analytical methods have been developed for describing the quality of inequality constrained estimates. However, these methods either ignore the probability mass in the infeasible region or the influence of inactive constraints and therefore yield only approximate results. In this article, a frequentist framework for quality description of inequality constrained least-squares estimates is developed, based on the Monte Carlo method. The quality is described in terms of highest probability density regions. Beyond this accuracy estimate, the proposed method allows to determine the influence and contribution of each constraint on each parameter using Lagrange multipliers. Plausibility of the constraints is checked by hypothesis testing and estimating the probability mass in the infeasible region. As more probability mass concentrates in less space, applying the proposed method results in smaller confidence regions compared to the unconstrained ordinary least-squares solution. The unknown control points of the free-form surface are therefore not simultaneously estimated but determined by cross-sectional curve fits. This uses much less computer time than the simultaneous estimation and gives identical results. The free-form surface should be determined with an uncertainty which does not considerably surpass the uncertainty of the measurements. This is investigated here for the example of a free-form surface for a pothole in a road determined by the measurements of a laserscanner. The uncertainties are expressed by standard deviations and confidence intervals. They are computed using Monte Carlo simulations for the positioning of a point by the measured coordinates and by fitting a free-form surface. The resulting uncertainties agree. In addition, the uncertainties of quantities characterizing the shape and the slope of the surface are determined by Monte Carlo simulations. The correlations are estimated by repeated observations. Uniform, trapezoidal and triangular distributions recommended by GUM are generalized to multivariate distributions by Monte Carlo simulations. To introduce the Type B component of uncertainty of GUM, which expresses uncertainty based on experience, two methods are discussed. The first one introduces individual corrections to the measurements with identical variances, the second one an identical correction with the same variance to each observation. Correlations are caused by the latter method. The correlations of the coordinates of points measured by the laserscanner Leica HDS 3000 are estimated from repeated observations. Except for the correlations of the three coordinates of the same points, the correlations turn out to be small. For these types of problems, iterative strategies are suitable because of their flexibility and effectiveness. The only shortcoming of iterative strategies in least squares estimation is that the inverse of the normal equation matrix as the carrier of the covariance information is either unavailable or very expensive to compute. This paper presents algorithms based on Monte Carlo integration, which can be incorporated very efficiently into iterative solvers and which are demonstrated to close the aforementioned gap. Tailored strategies for different types of solution techniques with respect to normal equations, observation equations, and combined models are treated. Finally, the paper presents new criteria to define confidence regions for the estimated covariance matrix of the parameters, as well as for all additional derived quantities. In a case study these techniques are applied to simulated GOCE data, where satellite gravity gradiometry and satellite-to-satellite tracking information are combined for reconstructing the gravity field. Until now, methods of gravity ?eld determination using satellite data have virtually excluded robust estimators despite the potentially disastrous effect of outliers. This paper presents computationally-feasible algorithms for Huber?s M-estimator (a classic robust estimator) as well as for the class of R-estimators which have not traditionally been considered for geodetic applications. It is shown that the computational time required for the proposed algorithms is comparable to the direct method of least squares. Furthermore, a study with simulated GOCE satellite gradiometry data demonstrates that the robust gravity ?eld solution remains almost unaffected by additive outliers. In addition, using robustly-estimated residuals proves to be more ef?cient at detecting outliers than using residuals resulting from least squares estimation.
